Position Available: Assistant Director at a Columbia University Media Research Center

An excellent entry-level or junior position for those interested in a career in media and communications, and the business, policy, and research surrounding them. The Assistant Director manages research projects, manages conferences, runs websites, helps prepare courses and manuscripts, and manages financial accounts. Supervisory responsibilities include more than a dozen part-time research assistants, administrative assistants, and web programmers. Position Requirements:

  • Most of all, candidate must be resourceful, a self-starter, and keen on learning about media industries
  • Interest in communications/media research or management
  • Organizational, writing, and interpersonal skills
  • Computer skills, preferably web programming, ideally prepared for taking all center activities online.
  • Adapts well to deadlines and to a dynamic and fast-paced environment requiring talent for multi-tasking
  • BA required at a minimum
  • Experience desirable, but for the right individual this can be an entry-level management or research position. Persons with more experience would receive added responsibilities.

Position Available: Project Manager for Columbia University Media Research Center

The Columbia Institute for Tele-Information (CITI) is a university research center focusing on strategy, management, and policy issues in communications, internet, and electronic mass media. Founded in 1983 at Columbia University, the institute is the first research center for communications economics, management, and policy established at a US management school. It has published about 70 books, over one thousand articles, and has conducted more than 200 conferences.

CITI is seeking a part-time Project Manager to organize and assist with our ongoing International Media Concentration project. Responsibilities include acting as the intermediary between the editor, CITI’s Director, Eli Noam, and our 30 global authors. Other tasks include reviewing submitted data, running regressions and some line editing.

Project Managers must be self-motivated, with strong Microsoft Excel and PowerPoint skills, and have the ability to run regressions and manipulate data. Strong preference will be given to candidates with an economics background. The Project Manager would work 25-40 hours per week.

Compensation will be commensurate with experience.

Position Requirements:

  • Interest and experience in telecom, information technology, electronic mass media, and related industries
  • Strong knowledge and skills with Microsoft Excel and PowerPoint
  • Well-developed research, written, and verbal communication skills
  • Flexibility and responsiveness in managing multiple projects simultaneously
